Digital Toolbox Final Cohesive Explanation
For my final project, I chose to document my Cinco de Mayo festivities and show the world how I make my famous nachos. Anyone who knows me on a personal level can attest to how much I love making nachos. The secret is using nacho cheese Doritos instead of normal tortilla chips. This simple switch of ingredients makes all the difference turning normal nachos a Doritos locos nacho (inspired by Taco Bell). To start, I began by using my snapchat with all different Cinco de Mayo filters to demonstrate and capture the moment. I used a combination of videos, photos, and custom-made posters to show the steps that I take to make my nachos.
Once filmed, I ate all the nachos of course, but I began editing and putting the film together. I chose to use iMovie on my iPad to put the film together and edit. The reason I chose this program instead of others was because I had direct access to it. iMovie is also easy to navigate which is important to me since I am not as technologically advanced as many other people are. Some of the videos and pictures have filters put on them and others do not. I imported a Spanish sounding audio recording in the background of the film in order to give it an authentic feel. This will help the viewer dive into the film and feel as if they are truly celebrating Cinco de Mayo with me. Once the film was completed, I uploaded it to my YouTube channel so that the film is available to the public. My final step was to upload the film link to my Word Press site.
Throughout this process, I learned how to use new programs such as iMovie and YouTube. Before this class, I had never made any sort of film or compilation videos. In addition, I was used to only using YouTube to watch videos rather than produce my own content. After my experience with these programs, it has become more apparent to me how easy they are to use. Something I have never thought about was making mini movies or producing content online for the public. Now, I think that it would be fun to create entertaining content for my YouTube channel that my generation would connect to while watching. There are millions of YouTube videos out there and some people have become YouTube sensations, making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year based on the number of views their videos get. As a side hustle, I would now consider trying to promote my own content on the media to get extra money on the side of my real job.
Overall, this course has taught me to appreciate, understand, and learn new media tools that I can take into my life. Entering the course on the first day, I knew barely anything. My knowledge span was how to upload a regular picture on Instagram and Facebook. After this class, I am now able to use photoshop, create my own website, edit and create audio, edit and create videos, and use my creativity. The most important thing this class has taught me is to have fun and use my creativity. After years of schooling, I feel I have lost my personal creative mind. Being taught that there is only one right answer and that I have to memorize mass amounts of information just to take an exam has limited my personal creative mindset to grow. This course has opened my mind to thinking outside of the box while embracing the process of learning. I appreciate everything I have learned and cannot wait to use these newly attained skills at my job this summer.
